Aides to Pawlenty have had discussions with top Iowa campaign staff, a sign that Pawlenty is furthest along in his plans for a 2012 campaign, state GOP officials said. Pawlenty will be busy in January, winding down his administration and conducting a national book tour, which is expected to stop in Iowa. Pawlenty contributed about $90,000 to Iowa candidates this year through his Iowa political action committee.

Gingrich has said he will likely decide in February whether to run and then announce in March. Gingrich's top political adviser, Joe Gaylord, told The Des Moines Register last month he would be "very surprised if he doesn't run." American Solutions political action committee, founded by Gingrich, contributed about $107,000 to Iowa candidates this year. Gingrich told the Register last month he is making arrangements for his businesses and other private-sector ventures to allow him to run, if that's what he decides.

Santorum announced formation of a political action committee in Iowa this fall and donated $45,000 to Iowa candidates as of late October. During his early Iowa trips, Santorum also has consulted with Nick Ryan, who managed 2006 GOP nominee for governor Jim Nussle's campaign. He also has talked with GOP operatives about potential Iowa staffing. Santorum is planning to visit Iowa again in mid-December.

Palin has been the most elusive of the prospective 2012 Republican caucus field who have visited the state. She has made three Iowa appearances, two as part of her recent national book tour and one as the headliner for the Iowa Republican Party's fall fundraiser in September. She also has contributed $15,000 to Iowa candidates. But, besides acknowledging in recent national interviews that she's weighing a bid for the presidency, she has said nothing about when she plans to decide.

Paul, the fifth-place 2008 caucus finisher, has been to Iowa and contributed to Iowa candidates and helped them raise money. But he has not been as active in the state as he was four years ago. He counts Drew Ivers, an Iowa Republican Party state central committee member, as a key backer in the state.

Huckabee campaigned once in February for Republican candidate for governor Bob Vander Plaats and headlined the annual fall fundraiser in November for the Family Leader, a social conservative umbrella group. But the 2008 caucus winner has not given strong signals about a 2012 campaign, despite contributing $15,000 from his political action committee to Iowa candidates. He said last month he is considering a run, but has no deadline for deciding.

Romney is less obvious about his 2012 decision making than he was at this time four years ago, when he had laid groundwork in Iowa and hired consultants. The second-place 2008 caucus finisher doesn't need to build name recognition here as he did then, but aides have also said he might not wage an all-out Iowa campaign if he runs again. Still, Romney has stayed in touch, and contributed $70,000 to Iowa GOP candidates this year.
HALEY BARBOUR
Mississippi governor
Iowa visits in 2010: 2
Barbour, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, helped guide more than $2 million in contributions to winning candidate for governor Terry Branstad. But Barbour has visited only twice this year. Barbour told the Register he was "gathering information" about an Iowa campaign, but will focus on the Mississippi legislative session, scheduled from January to May.
MIKE PENCE
U.S. representative from Indiana

Pence's one Iowa visit this year was to a key audience in October. He headlined the annual fundraiser of the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition, formerly known as the Iowa Christian Alliance. Pence has not been as active as some of the other 2012 prospects. But he has made some contacts, and he contributed $1,000 to attorney general candidate Brenna Findley.
JOHN THUNE
U.S. senator from South Dakota

Thune has said he will decide early next year whether to move forward with a campaign for the 2012 presidential nomination. In the meantime, he has kept his distance from Iowa, despite having a home in Sioux Falls, S.D., less than 10 miles from the Iowa border. Thune has made telephone calls to Iowa GOP officials and operatives and contributed $2,500 to Terry Branstad's campaign and the Iowa GOP this year.
MITCH DANIELS
Indiana governor
Iowa visits in 2010: 0
Daniels has not only stayed out of Iowa but also has made no inquiries to Iowa Republican Party officials. He has declined invitations to visit on behalf of the party or candidates, and he has made no contributions to the state party or top Iowa candidates. He raised and spent about $2 million from his political action committee, but focused on Indiana races. Daniels, now with a GOP Indiana Legislature, has said he's focused on the legislative session, set to run from January through March. (...)
